Passage Contribution Rubric for Educators
We regularly accept community passage contributions from certified reading specialists, ESL instructors, and literature teachers. If you would like to contribute a passage to our public testing library, your submission must fulfill the following quality standards:
Passages must contain between 250 and 650 words. Public domain non-fiction, historical documents, or classic literature are preferred.
Submissions must specify the target grade level (Grade 6 through Grade 16+) and pass Flesch-Kincaid automated difficulty scoring.
Include exactly 4 multiple-choice questions: one Main Idea question, two Factual Detail questions, and one Inferential/Vocabulary question.
Each question must have one indisputably correct answer supported directly by the text, and three plausible but demonstrably false distractors.
Passage Curation & Errata Correction Policy
Maintaining the editorial quality and reading accuracy of our passage library is a continuous priority. All texts incorporated into our assessments undergo strict automated readability scoring:
- Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level Calibration: We verify sentence lengths and syllable counts to ensure passages match their declared grade tier (from Grade 6 up to Grade 16+ post-graduate literature).
- Closed-Book Quiz Validation: Every comprehension question is audited to ensure unambiguous factual answers without tricky linguistic double-meanings.
- Rapid Errata Correction: If you identify any typographical mistake or historical ambiguity in our reading texts, please report it via email. Corrections are reviewed and deployed to production within 48 hours.
Technical Troubleshooting & Bug Reporting
We want your testing experience to be smooth, accurate, and distraction-free across all devices. If you experience an unexpected timer glitch, a display formatting error, or a calculation problem while taking a test, please report it directly to gouravdasriju5@gmail.com.
To help us diagnose and resolve any technical issue quickly, please include the following details in your message:
Let us know whether you were using a desktop computer, laptop, iPad, or mobile smartphone, along with your operating system (e.g., Windows 11, macOS, iOS, Android).
Specify your browser (Google Chrome, Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge). Font rendering and browser zoom settings can occasionally affect text container widths.
Include the URL of the test you were taking (such as the 1-Minute Diagnostic or SAT Reading Pacing Simulator) and which reading passage topic was selected.
Describe what happened versus what you expected (for example, whether the timer paused unexpectedly, an audio cue failed, or a quiz answer did not register).
Helpful Note: All timers and scoring algorithms run locally in your web browser using client-side JavaScript. If a test fails to start, please verify that JavaScript is enabled in your browser settings and that content-blocking extensions are not interfering with standard page scripts.
Classroom Implementation & Student Data Privacy (COPPA & FERPA)
As an independent developer, I built OnlineReadingSpeedTest.com specifically to eliminate the privacy risks, login barriers, and administrative overhead commonly associated with corporate EdTech software. Many public schools and school districts face stringent regulatory compliance hurdles under FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) when adopting digital literacy tools.
OnlineReadingSpeedTest.com solves this problem at the architectural level through a zero-data-collection model. Here is how our architecture safeguards students and schools:
We do not ask for student names, email addresses, student IDs, birth dates, or school identifiers. Students simply visit the URL, take their assessment, and receive immediate feedback without creating an account.
Reading timers, WPM calculations, comprehension scores, and percentile rankings execute locally within the student's web browser using client-side JavaScript. No timer telemetry or test results are transmitted to external servers.
Diagnostic test results are preserved exclusively in the student browser's ephemeral session storage or local storage for side-by-side comparison. Closing the browser tab or clearing browser data immediately resets all local records.
Every diagnostic module, calculator, and normative benchmark is completely open access. There are no "freemium" locks, trial period expirations, or upsells targeting teachers or students.
Research Inquiries & Academic Citation Formats
Undergraduate students, master's thesis candidates, and academic researchers in linguistics, psychology, and cognitive education frequently utilize our normative distributions and reading assessment engine. If you are citing our platform, normative figures, or speed calculations in an academic paper, peer-reviewed journal article, or classroom syllabus, please use the standardized citation formats below:
